The Launch of MyClub25

It is with great pride that Banners On The Wall launches a new project, this blog’s part to celebrate 25 years of hockey in Basingstoke under the name “MyClub25”.

Banners On The Wall has in some ways always been about the telling of stories; the story of matches, of players and of the club itself. The idea of MyClub25 is to get anyone who calls what we now call the Basingstoke Bison as their team (and even those of you who don’t) and get you to tell your story. The idea is to have a collection of stories from people connected the club whatever their capacity.

How you tell your story is up to you. You can write it, speak it, record it, paint it, draw it, a photograph that you have taken (not one of 5 Hole Photography’s shots, make sure it’s your own. We will know if you’ve “borrowed” one of his). Email, word document, Audioboo, Instagram, Vine, Youtube video, podcast, any way you want and we’ll find a way to publish them on here.

The focus is to be along two themes;

1. My first game and why I came back – what do you remember about that first time you walked into the Basingstoke Arena and what was it about the experience that made you keep coming and start to support the team regularly.

2. The greatest night – what it says on the tin; tell us about what for you was the greatest night you’ve had supporting the club. One of the B&H Plate wins? Were you a mascot once and never forgot it? Is there a game that stands out amongst all others because it was that exciting?

How long do I have to have been a fan to take part?

25 years and you were at the first Beavers game or 25 days and amazed by Doug Sheppard and the boys, it doesn’t matter. Anyone can take part. The point is to get as broad a spectrum of stories as possible to celebrate the club.

I’m not a fan of the Bison but I’d like to send something in. Can I?

By all means do but remember this is a celebration of hockey in Basingstoke. Don’t be a smart alec and send in some abuse filled load of nonsense. We have forums for that. That said if you’ve got a story to share then we’d love to hear it.

I don’t really do a lot of writing or anything like that. I’m not very good/people won’t be interested in what I have to say

Everybody can tell a story. You don’t need to be a journalist to write something down. You don’t need to be James Cameron to make a video. The whole point of MyClub25 is to share stories and celebrate ice hockey in Basingstoke from Beavers to Bison. It’s not about being a professional; it’s about sharing what you have to say.

How long/short should my submission be?

It can be as long or as short as you want but remember that people will have to read/listen/watch it and if you are submitting pictures that it needs to be in a format that can be embedded on the site. If you’re writing, say maximum 500 words or so. If you’re recording something, say about 7-8 minutes tops, upload it to a site (e.g. Youtube, Soundcloud etc.), make sure it can be embedded or there’s a link. Basically, use your common sense a bit.

Is there anything that would mean my submission won’t be used?

As I said, use your common sense. Don’t fill your written bit with tons of swear words, don’t eff this and that on your Youtube video. Hockey’s a family sport, remember. You don’t need to be neutral; you can say that you thought the ref wasn’t having his best night but don’t spend ages questioning their eyesight or their parentage.

Does it have to be on Banners On The Wall? I’d much rather it was on my own site

That’s fine but if you’re joining in, at least send a link so we post it out to people.

Do I have to put my name on it?

Not at all, you can be anonymous if you wish. It’s better to have the story and not know someone’s name than not have the story. If you don’t want your name attached to it though, thing about the format you use to send something in.

How long will MyClub25 run for?

The final date for submissions will be Sunday 6th April, the day of the playoff final so officially the last day of the season.  Stuff will go up as the season goes along so it’s not a case of stuff won’t be seen. The plan is it’s a regular feature.

How will stuff be laid out?

It depends what comes in; if someone sends in a really well made YouTube video then it might go up alone whereas if there’s 3 written pieces of 100 words in length, they might all go up together so as to not completely spam people. It’ll very much be a case of take stuff as it comes.

Most important question; how do I make a submission?

There are 3 ways to send something to us

Do also get in contact via any of those methods if you’re unsure or have any other questions.

I look forward to hearing from you all.
